Birth Doula Service
What is a Doula?A Doula is a member of your birth team whose main focus is to support you: the birthing person.
Your doctor or midwife may be attending to multiple births, your delivery nurse may need to end her shift, your partner may feel unwell or need a break - but your Doula is there to provide continuous support. Your Doula's main focus is how to make you more comfortable and to help you in having the best birth possible - even if unexpected situations arise. Your Doula knows your birth plan, and what is important to you in birth. They can advocate for you, help you ask questions, and facilitate communication between you and your care provider. Doulas to do not replace Childbirth Education, but they do have extensive knowledge of childbirth, and can help you with comfort measures, such as changing positions, encouraging words, or setting up a safe space with soothing lighting and supportive music. |
What are the benefits of having a Doula?According to Lamaze International "Up to 45% of new mothers have reported experiencing birth trauma" (The Journal of Perinatal Education, June 2018.)
In the US, statistics on maternal mortality are still high, and the numbers are even higher for Black, Indigenous, and POC populations (Vox, 2020). These statistics aren't meant to scare you - only to let you know that there is another way. Although there are no guarantees in birth, statistics also show that having a Doula increases birth satisfaction - as detailed on EvidenceBasedBirth.com: "[Researchers] found that overall, people who have continuous support [from someone who was NOT a staff member at the hospital and who was NOT part of their social network] during childbirth experience a:
Doulas can also support your partner by allowing them breaks, or by bringing them food or beverage - this helps them support you better! For more information on what Doulas do and how they can help you, check out the full article from Evidence Based Birth. |
Working with me as your Doula
I am so excited to be on my journey as a Doula - I love working with women and people with wombs, and I do believe I was a midwife in a past life. When I completed by doula training in June 2021, I felt as though I had known the information forever - more like remembering it than learning it for the first time.
My flat rate includes two prenatal visits to discuss your birth plan, your birth, and a postpartum visit. I also offer text, email, and video chat support throughout your pregnancy. Doula clients can also integrate Reiki services, Akashic Records Readings, Nursery Blessings, and Womb Blessings (after birth) - all at a 25% off discount. I also offer a 1-on-1 Pregnancy Support Journey that includes all the above services and healings along with 6 coaching calls. This is different from Doula service (as the coaching delves deeper into the emotional world than traditional Doula service) but the two can be combined.
I am a trauma educator, survivor advocate, and a sexual trauma survivor myself. If this is an experience you have had, you are not alone - I am trauma-informed and equipped to integrate your experience into your birth, in whatever ways are comfortable for you. Sometimes just voicing your experience to someone you can trust can go a long way. If you want to discuss this more, we can book a free 15-minute consultation.
I recommend clients interview a few Doulas to know who they will fit with the best. At our one-hour interview, I will go over my contract with you - it's pretty straightforward! I require that you and your partner both take a Childbirth Education class - this really helps us speak the same language before and during your birth. I can provide you with locations and resources for Childbirth Education. I'm sure many of you are already doing research and reading books, so I will be happy to hear about resources that you like, or to recommend any more that may be helpful. As a Doula, I am still learning - Birthwork is an ever-evolving field - and I look forward to learning with you.
As your Doula, my priority is your comfort and your satisfaction. I want your birth to be an experience you look back up and feel happy, proud, and supported. I would love to connect and discuss how I can support you.
